ECMO Cooperation Lviv

During my current visit to Ukraine, I was able see the progress of a cooperation project with my own eyes: At St Nicholas Children's Hospital in Lviv, the first patients have now been treated using ECMO (heart-lung machine) equipment financed by DAHW  charity (Deutsche Lepra- und Tuberkulosehilfe e.V.) The pediatric cardiosurgery centre in Lviv primarily operates on children and young adults with congenital heart defects. However, as is so often the case, things turned out differently: patient Sofia (3 years old, pictured) was in a critical state with severe pneumonia. For over a week, the device took over part of the breathing process, thus allowing her lungs to heal. The girl has now moved in with her mother and no longer requires external respiratory support. We work with all of our partners directly on site so that help and the use of funds stays effective and transparent.
